T20 World Cup: India look to bounce back from Pakistan setback in crunch test against nemesis New Zealand

India take on New Zealand in one of the most crucial Super 12 matches in Group 2 of T20 World Cup 2021 at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, October 31. Both the teams are heading into the crunch contest on the back of defeats to Pakistan who are running away at the top of the group with 3 wins from as many matches.

India captain Virat Kohli looked calm and composed when he was addressing the media on the eve of the big-ticket contest in Dubai. While he was condemning the online abuse of Mohammed Shami in strongly-worded statements, there were a few important statements that the skipper made that gave us a sneak peek of his mindset in the lead up to what is going to be a stiff test of his character.

The team that loses on Sunday is likely to find it difficult to progress to the semi-final stage. Quite a few have labeled India vs New Zealand as a virtual quarter-final but Afghanistan’s hammering of Scotland and their spirited performance against Pakistan have added an interesting flavor to Group 2, which isn’t as packed as the other one in the Super 12.

“Whether people portray it as India can’t afford to lose another game, that’s none of our business. We will play sport as we understand exactly how sport goes. How people think on the outside has no value whatsoever inside the group,” Kohli said on Saturday.

India need another memorable comeback in 2021

Virat Kohli’s captaincy reign in T20 World Cups did not get off to a good start. In fact, he became the first Indian skipper to lose a World Cup match to Pakistan in a World Cup. India were blown away by a spirited Pakistan side led by Babar Azam but ruling out the Men in Blue as early as after just one match is unwise, to say the least.

Be it the 36-all out in Adelaide or the Chennai Test hammering against England, India have made it a habit to come back stronger from setbacks in 2021. Virat Kohli’s men possess the firepower to test the best in the business in the T20 World Cup and there is no reason why this heavily-scrutinised bunch can’t step up once again.

Having had a week’s break, India must have had enough time to learn from their mistakes and work on them but such a big gap between two matches can also work against them, especially in a format as fickle as T20s.

India’s job is not getting any easier as they face New Zealand, who have been their nemesis in the recent past In fact, the Asian giants have not beaten the BlackCaps in an ICC event since 2003. Their recent exits from ICC events have come because of New Zealand — the 2019 World Cup semi-final and the ICC World Test Championship final earlier this year.

Team News – Will Hardik Pandya retain his place in the side?

Hardik Pandya has started bowling at the nets as India seem to have realized that having a 6th-bowling option is necessary after Pakistan cruised to a 152-run target without losing a wicket and 13 balls to spare last Sunday.

Virat Kohli made a U-turn as he stressed the need for a 6th bowling option, hinting Hardik will be able to bowl an over of two if needed.

“It’s very important to have a sixth bowling option — whether through me or Hardik (Pandya). He should have to be fit to be able to bowl one or two overs,” he said.

While the spotlight has been on Hardik’s bowling, India have lacked firepower in their pace bowling unit as the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami struggled to even look threatening against Pakistan. Kohli highlighted the importance of Shardul Thakur but remained tight-lipped about the team combination.

It will be interesting to see if India make changes to their bowling combination but it looks likely their batting will remain unchanged. With the likes of R Ashwin and Thakur available for selection, India will look to beef up their bowling department.

Martin Guptill fit for India clash on Sunday

On the other hand, New Zealand would want their skipper Kane Williamson to find top form. Struggling with an elbow niggle, Williamson hasn’t looked the part so far, be it in IPL 2021 or in their defeat to Pakistan. However, they can breathe easy as Martin Guptill is available for selection after an injury scare.

New Zealand have lost Lockie Ferguson but they have received a boost as pacer Adam Milne is available for selection. He can inject pace into the side if New Zealand decide to bring him in place of Tim Southee.

T20 World Cup: Targeting someone for his or her faith is unpardonable – Mohammad Kaif on trolls against Shami

ICC T20 World Cup 2021: Mohammad Kaif opened up on the online trolls and abuses that has been directed at Mohammed Shami ever since India’s defeat against Pakistan in their Super 12 match on Sunday.

The entire cricketing fraternity has been rallying behind Mohammed Shami after he faced online abuse following India’s loss (AP Photo)

HIGHLIGHTSIndia lost their T20 World Cup opener vs Pakistan by 10 wickets on Oct. 24Mohammed Shami has been subjected to online trolls and abuses since the defeatMohammad Kaif said targeting a player like Shami for his/her faith was “uncalled for and unpardonable”

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif once again spoke out in support of fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who was subjected to online trolls, abuses and threats on social media after the national team’s crushing defeat against Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 on October 24.

Kaif said targeting Shami for his faith and asking him to leave the country for being a muslim was “uncalled-for and unpardonable” in his opinion after India lost their first-ever World Cup-game against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai on October 24.

“I have been witnessing how Mohammad Shami was trolled after the game against Pakistan. I have played enough cricket to understand that the fans do get angry when their team loses a game by a big margin.

“A batsman getting out for zero or a bowler getting hit for a six will always face abuse be it in a World Cup clash against Pakistan or an under-arm gully cricket game. But targeting someone for his or her faith, asking them to leave the country is uncalled-for and unpardonable,” Kaif wrote in his column for India.com

“Just imagine how a player, who for all his life has sacrificed everything to earn an India cap, would be feeling.

“But Shami, I know, is a tough cricketer. I can tell him from my experience, we have much more genuine fans in our country who give us unconditional love and they can easily outnumber the trolls on social media.”

Kaif was also pained to see former cricketers from India and Pakistan engage in ugly war of words on social media and on news channels after the high-profile clash in Dubai.

Kaif was referring to the likes of Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Mohammad Amir and Waqar Younis, who have been making controversial statements since last Sunday.

“In this backdrop, it is painful to see the ugly spats between former players and the very disappointing behaviours of the fans on social media,” Kaif wrote.

Nokia T20 Android tablet may launch soon in India, confirms Flipkart teaser

Flipkart has apparently started teasing the launch of the Nokia T20 tablet in India ahead of Diwali.

HIGHLIGHTSFlipkart’s banner for Nokia T20 confirms the launch may take place soon. The banner and a microsite for the tablet may have been pulled.HMD’s first tablet may be called Nokia Tab T20 in India.

Nokia T20, which is HMD’s first tablet that runs on Android, is headed to India. According to a report, Flipkart has begun teasing the Nokia tablet in its Big Diwali Sale section, which means the launch is imminent. But, interestingly, Flipkart has listed the tablet as Nokia Tab T20, while the original name of the tablet is just Nokia T20. This may mean that HMD is thinking of an oversimplified name just to make Indian buyers understand what Nokia T20 is, which sounds about right. But I am not too sure about Flipkart’s name for the tablet because they are there mostly as placeholders.

MySmartPrice has shared a screenshot of the listing of the Nokia Tab T20 on Flipkart. Flipkart is calling the arrival of the Nokia Tab T20 the “festive biggest launch”, which means HMD may have plans to introduce its first tablet to the Indian market. However, there is no launch date available, so that is anyone’s guess right now. The listing seems to have been pulled at the time of writing, but the screenshot confirms the imminent launch. According to the report, Flipkart also had a dedicated page for the Nokia Tab T20 where all its specifications were listed.

The Nokia Tab T20 specifications include a 10.4-inch 2K display with thick bezels all around. It has a pixel density of 226 PPI, a 60Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 400 nits. The tablet is powered by a Unisoc 12nm Tiger T610 chipset, paired with 3GB and 4GB RAM options. For storage, there is a 32GB option and a 64GB option, coupled with the RAM variants, respectively. In case you think you need more storage, there is a microSD card slot that supports up to 512GB. Inside the tablet is an 8200mAh battery, which means a long runtime. For video calls, there is a 5-megapixel camera, while the rear camera has an 8-megapixel sensor.

HMD’s biggest pitch is its stock Android software, which is also going to be available on the Nokia Tab T20. It will come running Android 11, but it should be eligible for an upgrade to Android 12 and possibly the successive versions in the future.

The Nokia T20 tablet arrived in Europe earlier this month for a starting price of EUR 299, which is roughly Rs 19,900. That seems a little higher than what Realme and Lenovo are selling their new tablets for. The tablet market in India is going through an overhaul and the fact that more and more brands are showing interest means more options for customers. I am not sure whether or not HMD’s Nokia Tab T20 will be successful, but it will definitely bring some variety to the market that was once completely abandoned.

IPL gets 2 new teams: Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG Group gets Lucknow franchise, CVC Capital gets Ahmedabad franchise

Ahmedabad and Lucknow will be the two new teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after Adani Group and Manchester United owners submitted the highest bids in Dubai’s Taj Hotel.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday unveiled Ahmedabad and Lucknow as the two new teams for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after CVC Capitals Partners and Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG Group successfully bid for the franchises in Dubai’s Taj Hotel.

The RPSG Group picked Lucknow as their home base with a winning bid of Rs 7090 crores while CVC Capital Partners have opted for Ahmedabad with a bid of Rs 5166 crores.

The BCCI on September 21 announced that they have decided to extend the purchasing date for the Invitation to Tender (ITT) for the right to own and operate one of two proposed new IPL team documents till October 20 from the original deadline of October 5.

Before 2022, the 2010 edition of the IPL also featured 10 teams, with Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala joining the tournament before both franchises were terminated. The BCCI is adding two new teams after six years. In 2015, it added two teams – Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions – for the 2016 and 2017 editions as replacements for the then suspended Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals teams.

Notably, Manchester United’s owners were also one of the 10 teams to turn up for the Indian Premier League (IPL) team auction at Taj Dubai. The Adani Group and the RPSG Group, owned by Sanjiv Goenka, were among others who had submitted bids for the IPL teams. It was also learned that Rhiti Sports, promoted by MS Dhoni manager Arun Pandey, submitted a bid for Cuttack, which was later rejected.

The BCCI allowed a consortium of up to three companies/individuals to bid for a franchise. In this scenario, one of India’s richest business tycoons, Sanjiv Goenka and his RPSG Group, was expected to bid for the Ahmedabad franchise and the favorites to own a new franchise.

Harsha Bhogle slams Waqar Younis for calling Rizwan’s on-field namaz in front of Hindus special

Controversies around the high-voltage India-Pakistan T20 World Cup match on October 24 refuse to die.

Former Pakistan cricketer Waqar Younis sparked a fresh controversy on Tuesday, October 26, when he said on a Pakistani news channel that watching Pakistani opener Mohammad Rizwan offering namaz “in front of Hindus was very special to him”. Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar was also on the show.

However, this did not go down well with Indian sports commentator Harsha Bhogle. He called the statement “dangerous” and said that the cricket world needed to be united and not divided by religion.

Bhogle said: “For a person of Waqar Younis’ stature to say that watching Rizwan offering namaz in front of Hindus was very special to him, is one of the most disappointing things I have heard. A lot of us try hard to play such things down and talk up sport and to hear this is terrible.”

— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) October 26, 2021

“You would think that cricketers, as ambassadors of our game, would be a little more responsible. I am sure there will be an apology on the way from Waqar. We need to unite the cricket world, not divide it by religion,” he added.

“I really hope that a lot of genuine sports lovers in Pakistan are able to see the dangerous side to this statement and join in my disappointment. It makes it very difficult for sports lovers like us to try and tell people it is just sport, just a cricket match,” he added.

A video of Mohammad Rizwan offering namaz during the drinks break of the match on Sunday went viral.

Babar Azam’s Pakistani side scripted history, defeating Virat Kohli’s India by 10 wickets in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 match in Dubai. Rizwan made an unbeaten 79, while Babar scored 68 not-out. Before this game, Pakistan had never won a World Cup match against India in any format.

In a video that went viral on Sunday, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed had stoked a controversy saying that the sentiments of Muslims from around the world, including in India, were with the Pakistani cricket team during the match.

In another video that went viral after the match, Pakistani commentator Bazid Khan can be heard saying: “Kufr to toot hi gaya” (translated by many as the non-believers have been finally destroyed), to which captain Babar Azam says, “Yeh allah ka karm hai.”

T20 World Cup Warm-up Match: Belligerent Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul lead India to 7-wicket win over England

T20 World Cup: India rode on destructive half-centuries from openers Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul to register a 7-wicket win over England in their first practice match in Dubai on Monday.

India produced a power-packed performance with the bat on Monday to beat England by 7 wickets in their first warm-up match at the T20 World Cup in Dubai. Chasing 189 for victory, the 2007 champions rode on destructive half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul to cross the finish line with 6 balls to spare.

Kishan and Rahul opened the batting and added 82 for the first wicket to lay a solid foundation for the run chase before the latter got out against the run of play for 51 to Mark Wood.

Virat Kohli, who dropped to No. 3 to accommodate Rahul at the top, suffered a rare failure with the bat, scoring just 11 off 13 balls.

India vs England T20 WC: Highlights

But Kishan carried on attacking the English bowlers and top-scored with 70 not out off 46 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes before being replaced by Suryakumar Yadav, but the move didn’t work as he couldn’t fire as per expectations and got out for 8 with India needing 21 off 15 balls.

Fortunately the duo of Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya did the needful and knocked off the required runs without much trouble. Pant finished the match with a six and ended up with 29 not out while Pandya scored 12 not out.

Earlier, Mohammed Shami snapped three wickets but Jonny Bairstow smashed a 36-ball 49 to help England post a challenging 188 for 5 after being asked to bat first by Virat Kohli.

Besides Shami (3/40), fellow pacer Jasprit Bumrah (1/26) and spinner Rahul Chahar (1/43) were also among wickets at the ICC Academy Ground in Dubai.

Bairstow hit one six and had four hits to the fence in his knock, while Liam Livingstone (30) also contributed with the bat. But it was Moeen Ali’s whirlwind 20-ball 43 which powered England to a good score in the end.

India will next face Australia in their second warm-up match at the same venue on Wednesday (October 20) while England will lock horns with New Zealand in Abu Dhabi.

Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Kumara and Bangladesh’s Liton Das had to be separated by their teammates on Sunday after the pair came together in a heated exchange after the latter’s dismissal. Liton holed out at mid-off off Kumara in the sixth over after which the pair came together.

Liton even pointed his bat at Kumara before the pair were firmly separated.

Kumara was aggressive in the powerplay, earlier throwing the ball back at Liton’s opening partner Mohammad Naim after fielding off his own bowling. The ball was well over the stumps and seemed to be in line to hit Naim in the head but the latter had ducked at the right time.

Both teams had to qualify from the first round after failing to qualify directly for the Super 12. Bangladesh were stunned by Scotland in their first round game but then faced little issues in qualifying for the Super 12.

Both sides made one change each from the first XI of their previous first round match. Binura Fernando has come in for Maheesh Theekshana in the Sri Lanka team while Taskin Ahmed made way for Nasum Ahmed for Bangladesh.

Apple launched a slew of products in two major events held this year. The Cupertino giant was speculated to host another event around November, but that doesn’t seem to be happening now. Apple was expected to launch the iPad Pro, larger iMac and other products in November. However, as per reports, the iPad Pro, larger iMac is now scheduled to arrive in 2022. Apple held three launch events in 2020, but this year there will only be two.

Apple made the iPhone 13, iPad Mini, Apple Watch official in its September event while in its unleashed event, the Cupertino-giant made the new MacBook Pro, HomePod mini in different colours and AirPods 3 official. The company also revealed its new processors including the M1 Pro and M1 Max — the first pro chips designed for the Mac.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has now reported that he “wouldn’t expect” a third event from Apple this year. “I wouldn’t expect a third event this year or any other major announcements. Apple held three events last year because Covid-19 caused delays and disrupted its schedule. If Apple had any more Macs to launch this year, it would have announced them this past week—even if they wouldn’t be shipping until later this year. There’s really nothing else left of substance in the roadmap that would be ready for 2021. Instead, look for a larger Apple Silicon iMac, new Mac mini, new iPhone SE and new iPad Pro after 2022 gets underway.”

Gurman also revealed that Apple could launch the Mac mini, larger Apple Silicon iMac, new iPhone SE, and new iPad Pro in 2022.

Apple has launched the third-generation Apple AirPods in India for Rs 18,500. With the arrival of the AirPods 3, Apple has also slashed the price of the 2nd-generation AirPods to Rs 12,900. The MacBook Pro 14-inch, powered by M1 Pro processor and 512GB storage has been launched for Rs 1,94,900. Whereas the 1TB version of the same will be available for Rs 239900. The M1 Max variant with a 1TB variant has been launched for Rs 329900. The HomePod mini is available for Rs 9900.

HIGHLIGHTSScotland (123 for 2) beat Oman (122) by 8 wickets to qualify for Super 12sThis is the first time in history that Scotland have qualified for the main draw of a World Cup (ODI or T20I)Scotland will join India, Pakistan, New Zealand and Afghanistan in Group 2

Scotland stretched their unbeaten run with a comprehensive win by 8 wickets against Oman in Round 1 of the T20 World Cup to qualify for the Super 12s in Al Amerat on Thursday.

Scotland chased down the below-par target of 123 in 17 overs to knock out hosts Oman, top Group B and enter the main draw of a World Cup (ODI or T20I) for the first time in the nation’s cricketing history.

Oman needed to win by at least 79 runs to progress to the main tournament but failed to stop the likes of Kyle Coetzer, Matthew Cross and Richie Berrington from overhauling the target with 18 balls to spare.

Oman vs Scotland, T20 World Cup: Highlights

Captain Coetzer top-scored with 41 before the unbroken 48-run third-wicket partnership between Cross and Berrington took the Scottish home. Cross remained not out on 26 while Berrington finished the match with a six to finish on 31 not out.

Earlier, Scotland dished out a clinical bowling effort to bundle out Oman for a below-par 122 in 20 overs their final T20 World Cup first round Group B match.

Oman lost two quick wickets — Jatinder Singh and Kashyap Prajapati — after opting to bat before Aqib Ilyas (37 off 35 balls) and Mohammad Nadeem (25 off 21) stabilised the innings with a 38-run third-wicket stand.

But Scotland pulled things back, removing both Ilyas and Nadeem, who perished in search of one too many just after clobbering Mark Watt over the boundary. Sandeep Goud (5) and Naseem Khushi didn’t help their side’s cause either as Oman kept losing wickets at regular intervals to reach 98 for six after 16 overs.

Skipper Zeeshan Maqsood (34 off 30) tried his best to push the scoring rate but Scotland bowlers didn’t give Oman batters any leeway. Josh Davey (3/25), Michael Leask (2/12), Safyaan Sharif (2/25) and Mark Watt (1/23) were the wicket takers for Scotland.

Pixel 6 camera comes with cool features but using some apps, you can get them on your phone too

Pixel 6 has broken cover and the world is already abuzz with what Google has managed to create this time around. The new phone by Google comes with the company’s very-own chipset for the first time ever and improves on some big pain points like the battery capacity. However, the highlight this time, as has always been the case with Pixel phones, is the camera. Interestingly, the camera on the Pixel 6 promises a lot more than just clicking great pictures.

Together with an improved camera system on the Pixel 6 and the new Tensor chipset that promises more computational prowess than before, Google promises some cool new features to photography lovers. For instance, Pixel 6 users can remove unwanted objects from the background of any image they click, a feature that is quickly gaining the limelight in social media circles.

Rightly so, as such a level of on-device photo editing is not something you see every day. How many times have we looked at a photograph and thought that it could have been better without that unwanted element in it. Pixel 6 will now allow you to do that in a jiffy. At least, that is what Google promises.

However, Google is not the only one that can do that, and neither are the new Pixel phones.

While the concept might sound too outlandish, the fact of the matter is, there are third-party apps out there that let you do exactly the same treatment to photos on your smartphone. Just look for apps with search phrases like “Remove Unwanted Object” on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and you will see a ton of results to cater to your need.

Magic Eraser on the Pixel 6 removes unwanted objects from the background (Image: Google)

Downloading and using any of these apps will let you do just what Google promises with the Magic Eraser on the Pixel 6. In fact, there are even apps that will let you do the bang opposite of this – photobomb an image with the photo of your choice. The quality of the output, of course, will vary from app to app and it is likely that Google’s offering will rank among the best options for the function out there.

A similar search for “Photo Motion” or such terms will show results for apps that can add a motion effect to a still. For example, a photo of a cloudy sky can be edited to add a motion effect to the clouds so that they seem to be drifting in a particular direction. Google promises this with Motion Mode on the Pixel 6.

Motion Mode seen on the Subway train, as clicked through Pixel 6 (Image: Google)

The feature essentially applies motion blur to an image to make it look more dynamic. Bottomline is the same, Pixel 6 is certainly not the only smartphone that can do it.

Then there is Face Unblur – a feature wherein a moving object is captured with the utmost light and least blur for optimum clarity. Google says that there are four machine learning models that combine data captured from two sensors to give this output. One sensor captures the image at normal exposure while the other does so at faster exposure to minimise blur. Net effect – a sharper image of a moving object.

Now other apps might not be able to perform such on-device computation for similar results, but there are apps out there that reduce the level of blur in a photo. So, even if you manage to capture a blurry object on your regular smartphone, you can probably make it sharper using these apps.

Google says that the camera on the Pixel 6 is the “most advanced smartphone camera” yet. We are not contesting the claim, at least for now. What we merely want to point out is that the features that Google highlights for such a supposedly great camera are not new, and can be easily gained through third-party apps on any other smartphone. So, how the Pixel 6 sets itself apart in terms of photo editing is yet a mystery.

T20 World Cup: Don’t know how India get the ‘favourites’ tag in T20 cricket, says Michael Vaughan

Former England captain Michael Vaughan said that he fails to understand ‘how India get the favourites tag’ in the ongoing T20 World Cup in UAE and Oman.

HIGHLIGHTSDon’t know how India get ‘favourites’ tag in T20 cricket: VaughanVaughan said England are the favourites to lift the T20 World CupWest Indies and Pakistan will be threats in T20 World Cup: Vaughan

Former England captain Michael Vaughan raised questions about India’s favourites tag in the ongoing T20 World Cup in UAE and Oman, saying the Virat Kohli-led side ‘has been a long way off in their last few tournaments. Vaughan further pointed out that England are the favourites to lift the T20 World Cup, which began on October 17 with the qualifying rounds.

Virat Kohli-led India will head into the T20 World Cup 2021 as one of the favourites for the title with significant firepower in their batting and bowling. India will open their campaign against Pakistan with a blockbuster clash at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on October 24.

“England for me are the favourites. I don’t know how India get the ‘favourites’ tag in T20 cricket. I just think they’ve been a long way off in the last few tournaments,” Vaughan told BBC Test Match Special.

“West Indies and Pakistan will be threats. I wouldn’t write off Pakistan either. New Zealand have high-class players and you know they will come up with strategies to win games.

“I’ll say it now, I don’t give Australia much chance. In T20 cricket they’ve struggled. Glenn Maxwell’s exceptional so he will have to have an incredible tournament.

“But I don’t see the Aussies doing too much. England, India, West Indies, New Zealand, one of those four and maybe Pakistan because of the conditions,” Vaughan said.

The former England captain said the pitches will play a crucial role in the outcome of the tournament.

“The pitches will be interesting because they’ve been used and slow [during the Indian Premier League]. I think 150-160 might be defendable scores,” he said.

Premier League: Leicester City end Manchester United’s 29-game unbeaten run away, City beat Burnley

Premier League: Manchester United were punished for a poor defensive display at Leicester City as the Red Devils’ run of 29 unbeaten away matches came to an end. Meanwhile, Manchester City kept the pressure on leaders Liverpool with a 2-0 win over Burnley.

HIGHLIGHTSManchester United beaten 2-4 by Leicester City away from homeComeback man Marcus Rashford was on target but it was not enough for UnitedManchester City defeated Burnley to retain the 2nd spot on the league table

Leicester City came up with a clinical performance against Manchester United at home, ending their four-match winless run. A 2-4 defeat at the King Power Stadium meant United’s 29-match unbeaten run away from home came to an end.

Goals from Youri Tielemans, Caglar Soyuncu, Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka helped Brendan Rodgers’ men outclass United for whom Cristiano Ronaldo had a forgettable night.

Manchester United are at the 5th spot with 14 points from 8 matches, 4 points behind leaders Liverpool who hammered Watford 5-0 away from home on Saturday. Pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer grows as United have managed just 1 point from their last three Premier League games.

With the score 2-2 late in the game, Vardy netted a superb goal with the outside of his foot to cap a frantic five-minute spell before substitute Patson Daka put the icing on the cake for Leicester in stoppage time.

Mason Greenwood had fired United into a 19th-minute lead when he unleashed a thunderbolt from 20 metres that flew into the far corner as it shaved the inside of the post.

But the visitors were punished for sloppy passing in the danger zone in the 31st as Kelechi Iheanacho robbed Harry Maguire of the ball and squared it for Tielemans to hit the top corner with a looping shot over goalkeeper David De Gea.

Marcus Rashford equaliser in vain

A tame second half came to life when Soyuncu turned the tide with a close-range effort in the 78th minute before Marcus Rashford, returning after shoulder surgery in August, levelled for United in the 82nd.

Less than 60 seconds later, however, substitute Ayoze Perez chipped the ball into Vardy’s path and the striker gave De Gea no chance, before Daka took advantage of more poor defending by United to tap the ball in at the far post.

Manchester City keep pressure on Liverpool

Meanwhile, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne were on target as Manchester City beat Burnley 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday to stay within a point of Premier League leaders Liverpool

Pep Guardiola’s side are on 17 points from eight games, in second place, with Liverpool top on 18 points. Chelsea could return to the top of the table if they win at Brentford later on Saturday.

IOC voices concerns over FIFA’s push for World Cup every two years: Further massive strain on athlete welfare

The International Olympic Committee said on Saturday it has “concerns” about FIFA’s push for soccer World Cups every two years.

Though IOC President Thomas Bach said last month “we will not interfere in this discussion,” his organization stepped in on Saturday after meeting in Athens to detail objections it shared with soccer stakeholders.

Clashes in the schedule with other sports, the men’s World Cup overshadowing women’s editions of the tournament, and “a further massive strain” on athlete welfare were all cited in an IOC statement after an executive board meeting.

The IOC did not refer to potential future World Cup-Olympics clashes – potentially as soon as 2028 when the Summer Games are hosted by Los Angeles – in its statement.

The IOC did criticize FIFA’s tactics in promoting the biennial World Cup project by noting a wider consultation across soccer “has obviously not taken place”.

FIFA revealed its detailed plan last month, after meeting with retired players, to redraft the calendar of international soccer competitions with biennial World Cups for men and women at the heart.

The proposal strongly backed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino was announced before formally consulting member federations in the World Cup strongholds of Europe and South America.

Those regions’ governing bodies, UEFA and CONMEBOL, have warned of a World Cup boycott if FIFA pushes ahead with a plan that would undermine their continental championships, which are organized on the same four-year cycle as the IOC’s Summer Games. All are next due in 2024.

The IOC cited “tennis, cycling, golf, gymnastics, swimming, athletics, Formula One and many others” as sports which would be affected by more World Cups.

“This would undermine the diversity and development of sports other than football,” the Olympic body said.

FIFA, whose next scheduled World Cups are in 2022 and 2026, has not specified wanting to stay on even-numbered years for a biennial men’s World Cup. A switch to odd-numbered years, possibly starting in 2029, could be proposed.

At an Olympic briefing after an executive board meeting, spokesman Mark Adams was asked if Infantino, who is an IOC member, had talked with Bach about the biennial World Cup plan before going public with it.

Adams said he could not give details though the IOC kept in touch with sports governing bodies.

When asked last month about FIFA’s plans at an IOC news conference, Bach suggested “contributions of the continental associations” — such as UEFA and CONMEBOL — were making the issues clear.

FIFA has not set a formal date for a decision on its World Cup proposal, though has suggested a meeting of its 211 national members could be held in December.

It’s official: Apple set to launch new MacBook Pro with M1X chipset at October 18 event

Apple has sent out invites for the October 18 event, which is likely to see the launch of the MacBook Pro with M1X. The invite doesn’t say much, but the tagline reads, “Unleashed”, hinting at the company’s all-new chipset, which is likely to be the successor to the M1 chip.

Apple is expected to launch all-new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models at the special launch event on October 18. However, the most important thing to look out for will be the M1X processor, which will be the successor to the M1 chip that debuted last year. The new MacBook Pro is likely to feature a mini-LED display and come with an HDMI port as well as an SD card slot. Apple is expected to remove the touch bar and bring back the traditional function keys. The new MacBook Pro models are not likely to see a major design overhaul, but we will have our fingers crossed. Apart from the MacBook Pro, Apple is also likely to announce the macOS Monterey release date. While there aren’t too many hints but Apple may also debut the AirPods 3 at the same event, but we are too optimistic about this one.Greg Joswiak, Apple’s SVP Marketing, has shared a video that further hints about the upcoming MacBook Pro with system speed teased. The October 18 launch event is a Monday, which is not typically Apple’s typical day for launches, but it seems that we are up for a surprise.Unleashed! These next six days are going to speed by. #AppleEvent pic.twitter.com/0ops2bVPvl— Greg Joswiak (@gregjoz) October 12, 2021
To recall, Apple launched the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini with the M1 chip last year in November. The 13-inch MacBook Pro price in India started at Rs 1,22,900.

Yes or no, Android phones keep tracking users even without permission

According to researchers at the Trinity College in Dublin, there is no way to opt-out of the data tracking from these system apps, unless users decide to root their devices as these apps are usually packaged into the read-only memory (ROM). HIGHLIGHTSResearchers have found that some Android devices have system apps that come preinstalled with Android devices that track user data and share it with the OS.They also found that such system apps, even if they are not opened, will track data and will also share it with third-party apps. The researchers studied popular proprietary variants of the Android OS developed by Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei and Realme.Owning an Android phone could mean that your data is being tracked even if you do not give permission to the device to do so. Researchers have found that some Android devices have system apps that come pre-installed with Android device or bloatware, that comes right out of the box, sends back user data to the OS’s developers and various third parties. These system apps could serve some functionality like the camera or messages app but would send data to their OS even if the user never opened them.

According to researchers at the Trinity College in Dublin, there is no way to opt-out of the data tracking from these system apps, unless users decide to root their devices as these apps are usually packaged into the read-only memory (ROM).The researchers studied popular proprietary variants of the Android OS developed by Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei and Realme. They also reported on the data shared by the LineageOS and /e/OS open-source variants of Android. The researchers noted that Samsung has the largest share of this market, followed by Xiaomi, Huawei and Oppo which is the parent company of Realme).“System apps cannot be deleted (they are installed on a protected read-only disk partition) and can be granted enhanced rights/permissions not available to ordinary apps such as those that a user might install. It is common for Android to include pre-installed third-party system apps, i.e. apps not written by the OS developer,” the research paper noted. “One example is the so-called GApps package of Google apps (which includes Google Play Services, Google Play Store, Google Maps, Youtube etc). Other examples include pre-installed system apps from Microsoft, LinkedIn, Facebook and so on,” it adds.Reported first by Gizmodo, the researchers noted that the system apps would send something called the “telemetry data,” which includes details like the user device’s unique identifier, and the number of apps from the company of a pre-installed app that you have installed on your phone. The data also gets shared by third-party apps or analytics providers that users might have plugged in.Meanwhile, Apple has released a 31-page-long document titled “Building a Trusted Ecosystem for Millions of Apps (A threat analysis of sideloading)”, where it has talked about various aspects of iOS and its closed ecosystem criticising EU’s draft proposal forcing apple to allow users to download third-party apps. “Supporting sideloading through direct downloads and third-party app stores would cripple the privacy and security protections that have made iPhone so secure, and expose users to serious security risks,” Apple said to support its defensive stance against the argument that iOS should be made open like Android. Apple is citing reports from regulators from around the world to show the shortcomings of Android because of its open nature.Click here for our site’s complete coverage of the coronavirus pandemic.

Facebook to make internal groups private after whistleblower shared leaked documents, leaked document reveals

Facebook’s decision to ramp up internal conversation was also revealed by a leaked document, as per which Facebook will remove employees “whose work isn’t related to safety and security.” (Picture: Reuters)HIGHLIGHTSFacebook is working on making some internal groups and chat forums more private. As per the report, employees themselves often take to its internal communication platform, Workplace, to discuss controversial issues facing the company.Haugen shared documents that included slides detailing the company’s research into teen mental health and misinformation.Facebook is working on making some internal groups and chat forums more private after Frances Haugen shared internal documents with the Congress, Securities Exchange Commission (SEC), and with the press. Interestingly, Facebook’s decision to ramp up internal conversation was also revealed by a leaked document, according to which Facebook will remove employees “whose work isn’t related to safety and security.”After the documents were revealed, the social media giant has decided to limit access to these internal groups to deal with sensitive issues like safety and elections.

Haugen had been sharing internal documents from Facebook with the Congress and the Wall Street Journal weeks before she even revealed her identity. This was because Facebook employees discussed and talked about the social network’s policies on the internal forum, which was open and promoted sharing, according to The New York Times. As per the report, employees themselves often take to its internal communication platform, Workplace, to discuss controversial issues facing the company. The company is making some internal groups private and will remove employees “whose work isn’t related to safety and security,” according to the report. “Sensitive Integrity discussions will happen in closed, curated forums in the future,” the company told employees in a memo.Apart from her findings of Facebook, Haugen shared documents which included slides detailing the company’s research into teen mental health, memos about how the company has handled rules for VIPs, and misinformation.Haugen later decided to reveal her identity and noted that Facebook realised that if they change the algorithm to be safer, people will spend less time on the site, and will click on fewer ads, making less money. “I’ve seen a bunch of social networks and it was substantially worse at Facebook than what I had seen before. Facebook, over and over again, has shown it chooses profit over safety,” Haugen had told 60 Minutes. This is not the first time leaked documents have been criticised by tech giants. Last month, Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed his displeasure over employees who leak crucial information about the company. Cook in an email to Apple employees has said that the company is everything in its power to hunt down the leakers. He also noted that the people who leak confidential information do not belong at Apple. Ironically, Cook’s email to Apple to employees about the leakers was also leaked by the employees.Click here for our site’s complete coverage of the coronavirus pandemic.

iPhone 13 production to take a hit as Apple faces chip shortage

A new report indicates that Apple has cut down its expectations on the iPhone 13 production this year due to the ongoing chip shortage. Sources indicate that the company has conveyed the same to its manufacturing partners as well. iPhone 13 Pro Max (Image: India Today Tech)HIGHLIGHTSApple hoped to produce 90 million iPhone 13 units by this year’s end.It is likely that it will not meet this target with the ongoing chip shortage. The supply shortage is being experienced from two major suppliers of Apple. It seems like the ongoing chip shortage is going to have a major impact on the iPhone 13 production this year. While Apple had expected to produce 90 million new iPhone models in the last three months of the year, it might have to cut this projection down by as many as 10 million units.

Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports that Apple is the latest victim of the supply constraints on chipsets used in smartphones. The sources suggest that the projected iPhone production will not be met because Broadcom Inc. and Texas Instruments Inc. are struggling to deliver the required units. Broadcom Inc. supplies wireless components for iPhones while the latter provides various chipset components and displays to Apple.A similar component shortage from other suppliers also dampens Apple’s plans. The report mentions that Apple has addressed the issue in front of its other manufacturing partners and informed them of the lower-than-expected iPhone production this year. The issue will build upon the already delayed run of the iPhone 13 Pro models. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max units that have already been ordered through the Apple website are expected to be delivered by next month. Shipment delays are also affecting the availability of the models in offline stores. It is not that Apple was clueless about this impending impact of chip shortage on its iPhone 13 sales. Apple CEO Tim Cook had predicted this back in July during a call with investors, stating that the chip shortage around the world will affect the production of iPhones in the coming months. By then, iMacs and iPads were already seeing a delayed shipment due to the supply constraint. The tech major tried to dissolve this effect by redirecting its available resources to the latest iPhones. For this, Apple discontinued iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max right after the launch of the iPhone 13 series. Though that certainly can’t make up for the huge drop in supply that is being experienced across the industry.Apple’s struggle with chip supply is a stark reminder of how acute the problem is. With the technology behemoth unable to secure enough chip supplies for its products, it can only be imagined what the not-so-big players in the industry would be facing at this point. Analysts predict that the chip supply will continue to be dismal throughout next year.Click here for our site’s complete coverage of the coronavirus pandemic.

IPL 2021: MI can be proud of fabulous run over last 5-6 years, says Rohit Sharma after title defence ends

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma said he felt a little disappointed that the 5-time champions were not able to qualify for the play-offs of IPL 2021 but said the franchise can hold their heads high for their performances over the last 5-6 years in the cash-rich T20 league.

Mumbai Indians gave it their all to make the most of an outside chance to reach the play-offs in their final league stage match on Friday in Abu Dhabi. MI headed into the match, knowing they had a mountain to climb as they needed to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 171 runs.SRH vs MI, IPL 2021: Highlights | ReportIshan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav sent the Sunrisers Hyderabad on a leather hunt as they hitting 84 and 82, respectively in quick time as Mumbai Indians posted 235, their highest total in the history of the tournament. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad came up with an impressive chase, hitting 193 and falling short of the total by only 42 runs, ending Mumbai’s hopes of a miracle. With the defeat, Mumbai Indians’ title defence came to an end. They had won the titles in 2019 and 2020 and were hoping for a hat-trick but an inconsistent run in IPL 2021 cost them an opportunity to create history.”We have had on and off season this time around. We have had a fabulous run as a franchise. It was wonderful to be part of this set-up, we can be very proud of that. We were getting momentum in Delhi and there was a break, that didn’t help the team. It was a collective failure of group,” Rohit Sharma said.Fans have always been supportive: Rohit thanks MI familyRohit thanked the Mumbai Indians fans for backing them through their highs and lows and expressed disappointment at not being able to fulfil their expectations this season.”Very happy with win today, we gave everything, I am sure it was entertaining for the fans as well. They have always been supportive, they have always stood by us. Little disappointed we didn’t go through,” he added.Mumbai Indians have won 4 titles in the last 6 years (2015, 2017, 2019, 2020) but they might have to give up on their envious core group as IPL 2022 will have 10 teams and will be preceded by a mega auction. It remains to be seen if MI can continue their dominance in the T20 league if they are rebuild their core.Rohit though said he doesn’t see the expectations on Mumbai Indians as pressure but a reflection of the faith on the quality of the team over the years.”When you play for a franchise like Mumbai, you are always expected to go out and perform. I wouldn’t call that as pressure. More than anything, it’s expectations.”Chennai Super Kings take on table-toppers Delhi Capitals in the Qualifier 1 on Sunday while Kolkata Knight Riders will face Royal Challenges Bangalore in Eliminator on Monday, October 11.
